The Heartland State Trail was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in the country. It is a 49 mile multiple use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. Views of lakes, rivers and streams are numerous, and many are accessible from the trail. The trail passes through northern hardwood forests and stands of pine and spruce. Common mammals noticed along the trail include whitetail deer, raccoon, red fox, porcupine, beaver and muskrat. Many varieties of birds can be seen along the trail including the bald eagle, which has a large population in the Chippewa National Forest and surrounding area.
Approximately 120 miles long, the Paul Bunyan State Trail extends from Crow Wing State Park (south of Brainerd/Baxter) to Lake Bemidji State Park (north of Bemidji). The Paul Bunyan State Trail is the longest continuously paved trail in the Minnesota State Trail system, and one of the longest in the United States. For more information about these trails, visit their website at: www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/heartland
